Eight thousand on three ships fill the Port of Funchal to capacity
'Marella Explorer 2' and 'Mein Schiff Relax' joined the 'AIDAbella' today, a cruise ship that arrived yesterday morning for a 37-hour stopover. In total, the three ships, which occupy almost the entire berthing area of the Port of Funchal, are carrying approximately 8,000 people, including passengers and crew.
The ship that was already here, which arrived from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with 2,041 passengers and 625 crew members on board, will set sail at 6 PM this Wednesday towards Fuerteventura, also in the Canary Islands. The ship has been sailing for 20 years.
The 'Mein Schiff Relax' arrived at 6 AM, also from Las Palmas, and is scheduled to depart at 10 PM towards La Palma, the 'famous' island of the Cumbre Vieja volcano. The ship, which debuted in Funchal on October 29th, is 333 meters long and, on its last visit to these waters on November 10th, carried 3,981 passengers and 1,400 crew members. It was launched in March of this year.
Meanwhile, the 'Marella Explorer 2', which cancelled its stop in the Port of Funchal last Wednesday due to bad weather, is following practically the same route, having returned from Fuerteventura at 7:00 AM and departing for La Palma at 6:00 PM. This 248-meter ship, docked at Pontinha, has a capacity for 1,814 to 2,177 passengers and 780 crew members, and is the most 'veteran' of the three, having sailed for 30 years.
