11 million overnight stays make 2025 the second best year for tourism

Figures achieved in just 10 months and which, by November, will surely have far surpassed the 2024 record

The number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2025 has already exceeded 11 million, placing the year in second place (only 2024 was better with 11.76 million overnight stays), but this figure was achieved in just 10 months. "Tourist accommodation registered, in the month of October 2025, the arrival of 228,800 guests, who generated 1,174,300 overnight stays, reflecting positive year-on-year variations of 11.4% and 11.8%, respectively," reports DREM today. "The hotel sector accounted for 66.7% of overnight stays in October 2025 (783,200), growing 5.9% year-on-year, while vacation rentals (31.0% of the total) and rural tourism (2.3% of the total) increased by 26.9% and 11.2%, respectively."

For comparability purposes, as mentioned in its information, since the data released by the INE (National Institute of Statistics) does not include local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds, this data is omitted. Thus, "according to this logic of results analysis, overnight stays in tourist accommodation registered a growth of 6.1% compared to October 2024, a variation higher than that verified nationally (+2.4%)," also ranking second by region. "In October 2025, the largest increases in the number of overnight stays were recorded in Alentejo (+10.8%) and Madeira (+6.1%). Conversely, the Azores, Algarve and Central regions showed decreases of 1.5%, 0.7% and 0.1%, respectively. The regions with the highest number of overnight stays were the Algarve (26.7% of the total) and Greater Lisbon (24.6%)."

According to DREM, "the net bed occupancy rate for tourist accommodation in the Region, in the month in question, was 71.4%, +2.0 percentage points (p.p.) compared to the same month of the previous year (69.4%). In turn, the room occupancy rate reached 82.1% (80.3% in October 2024)", and "the average stay in all tourist accommodation was 4.59 nights (the same value as in October 2024). The highest values continue to be observed in hotels (4.65 nights) and local accommodation (4.54 nights), followed by rural tourism, which has the lowest average stay, at 3.62 nights".

Going back to the beginning, "in the first ten months of 2025, the total number of guests entering tourist accommodation in the Region reached 2,109,200, representing a growth of 10.0% compared to the same period last year," so that "overnight stays saw an increase of 9.2% compared to the same period in 2024, exceeding 11.0 million," as we mentioned.

Supported by 10 markets

"It is worth highlighting that the top 10 source markets accounted for 79.6% of total overnight stays recorded in October 2025. Germany (20.1% of the total; +0.1% compared to October 2024), Portugal (17.8%; +33.1%) and the United Kingdom (16.8%; +4.0%) stood out with a higher share. In fourth position, in terms of relative weight in total overnight stays, was the French market (6.6%; +0.2%), followed by the Polish market (6.1%; +21.1%)," summarizes the top 5, which represent 67.4% of the total.

"In cumulative terms, from January to October 2025, the two main international source markets registered opposite annual variations in overnight stays," says DREM, and "the German market saw an increase of 0.3%, while the British market showed a decrease of 1.2%." It adds: "The market of residents in Portugal, the second main market in this period, observed the most significant positive annual variation for the period, with a growth of 39.3%." The domestic market clearly compensated for the stagnation and decline of the other two.

"In October 2025, total revenue and lodging revenue registered year-on-year growth of 16.3% and 19.6%, respectively, reaching €81.5 million and €58.5 million, respectively," while "in the country as a whole, in the same month, total revenue also showed a positive year-on-year variation (+7.3%), as did lodging revenue, which showed growth of 6.1%," significantly lower figures.

"In cumulative terms, revenue variations in the Region were +18.9% and +20.4%, respectively, totaling €772.7 million for total revenue and €558.9 million for lodging revenue from January to October 2025," it calculates.
