 São Lourenço Palace's North Bastion Guardhouse Finally Renovated


The north bastion guardhouse, an icon of the city of Funchal, is finally restored to the residents of Funchal and tourists who stroll along the busy Avenida Arriaga.


The final consolidation of the dome of this guardhouse was the first of the works completed as part of the ongoing heritage preservation intervention in the civil area of ​​São Lourenço Palace, as provided for in the PRR/Cultura and coordinated by Patrimônio Cultural, IP.






Closed to visits and cultural events until the completion of this major intervention, São Lourenço Palace marks JEP 2025 with a thematic presentation that aims to showcase the heritage evolution and stories of this guardhouse, a privileged witness to the urban evolution and events and experiences of downtown Funchal from the mid-17th century to the present day, a true "Window to the Past and Gateway to the Future."
