Funchal Celebrates World Tourism Day with Folklore at Praça do Povo
Performances by folklore groups commemorating World Tourism Day began this morning at Praça do Povo, with the Casa do Povo da Camacha Folklore Group performing at around 11:00 am.
The space was filled with color and music, and traditional Madeiran costumes enchanted passers-by. Many tourists gathered to watch the performance and captured the moment in photographs and videos.
To mark this international day, the Regional Secretariat of Tourism, Environment, and Culture, through the Regional Tourism Board, has prepared a diverse range of activities to take place in Madeira and Porto Santo.
Following this performance, several others are also planned, including the MonteVerde Folklore Group at 3:30 pm at Praça do Povo, and the Camacha Youth Folklore Group at 1:00 pm at the central square on Avenida Arriaga. In Santa Cruz, on the Arrivals Level of Madeira Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, the Casa do Povo de Gaula Folklore Group will perform at 11:00 a.m. and the Casa do Povo de Santa Cruz Folklore Group at 3:00 p.m. In Ponta do Sol, on Avenida 1.º de Maio, the Ponta do Sol Folklore Group will perform at 3:30 p.m. In Santana, at the Traditional Houses next to Santana City Hall, the Casa do Povo de Santana Folklore Group will perform at 12:15 p.m. In Porto Santo, at Largo do Pelourinho, the Porto Santo Folklore Group will perform at 6:00 p.m.
Also noteworthy are a guided tour in English at 12:00 p.m. at the Adegas de São Francisco (Funchal), access to the gardens of the Madeira Theme Park (Santana), visits to the Engenhos do Norte (Porto da Cruz), and the Sociedade dos Engenhos da Calheta (Calheta Sugar Mills Society).
Today, various gifts and local products will be distributed at the region's seven Tourist Information Offices: Funchal (Avenida Arriaga and Vidamar), Madeira International Airport, Porto Moniz, Porto Santo, Ribeira Brava, and Ponta do Sol.
