Bad weather for this weekend in Madeira

The Madeira Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC) today recommended that the population take a series of precautions in view of the forecasts of bad weather, especially between the end of this afternoon and Saturday morning.

In a statement, the Civil Protection Service states that, “associated with the depression that has affected the weather in the Madeira archipelago, periods of rain or heavy showers are expected to continue, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms, especially between the end of the afternoon of the 15th [Friday] and the early morning of the 16th [Saturday]”.

The Regional Civil Protection Service therefore recommends that people avoid travelling to the areas most affected “by this type of weather situation”.

Adopting defensive driving, not driving in areas at risk of landslides and ensuring that rainwater drainage systems are unblocked are other recommendations from the regional authority.

Civil Protection also warns of the risks on both road and foot routes, “especially in mountainous areas, exposed slopes and coastal areas, and therefore advises special care”.

The southern and northern coasts and highlands of Madeira will be under a yellow warning due to the forecast of rain, between 3:00 pm and 9:00 pm today, then changing to orange until 9:00 am on Saturday, and back to yellow until 6:00 pm, according to the IPMA.

For the island of Porto Santo, a yellow warning is expected between 6:00 pm today and 6:00 pm on Saturday.

The orange warning is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a moderate to high risk meteorological situation.

The yellow warning, the least serious on a scale of three, is issued whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.

The Port Authority of Funchal also issued warnings of strong winds, strong sea waves and bad weather for the Madeira coastline, alerting the maritime community and the general population to the precautions to be taken.
