Mourning for the 61 dead in Spain yesterday due to the strong storm in the Valencia area
The regional government of the Valencian Community, in eastern Spain, confirmed this Wednesday, the 30th, that the floods caused by a strong storm in the province of Valencia leave a provisional death toll of 62.
This is an initial assessment based on information received from the various security and emergency agencies and institutions and provided by the Valencian government, which activated the Multiple Victims Procedure last night.
The process of surveying and identifying the victims is already underway, on a day when Valencia woke up with collapsed roads, people awaiting rescue and extensive material damage in multiple parts of the province.
The president of the Valencian Community, Carlos Mazรณn, already warned this morning that, “in anticipation of what may come”, forensic medicine and identification resources for possible victims have been activated, the number of which will be updated in the next few hours.
Numerous emergency resources are mobilized, waiting to be transported to the worst-affected areas, but this is currently not possible because many roads are closed, meaning that rescues have had to be carried out by helicopter.
During the night, around 200 people were rescued by land, although there are still “several hundred people trapped” on the A-3 and A-5 motorways, reported the head of the Valencia provincial fire brigade, Josรฉ Miguel Basset.
Access to the most isolated areas continues to be a major problem in assisting those affected, while the regional government has made a telephone number available to the relatives of the missing people.
The population of the province of Valencia was once again warned on Wednesday, via their cell phones, to avoid any type of movement on the roads due to the effects of a phenomenon that has also caused cuts in telecommunications and electricity supply in large areas of the province.
